Email Unsubscriber is the Cleanfox alternative for people who would rather pay once than pay with their inbox. Cleanfox is a free app funded by anonymized e-receipt statistics its parent company sells. Email Unsubscriber scans inside your browser with read-only access, never receives your email content, keeps no refresh token, and charges one payment for 30 days.

Email Unsubscriber vs Cleanfox

Cleanfox is open about its business model. The comparison below is between two ways of paying for the same job, and both are documented on each company’s own pages.

How the tool is funded

Email Unsubscriber

€2.99 / 30 days, one payment. No data monetization.

Cleanfox

Free. Parent company sells anonymized statistics built from the e-receipts in users’ inboxes.

Parent company Foxintelligence (NielsenIQ since December 2021) states it sells aggregated, anonymized market-research statistics rather than personal data.

What Cleanfox does well

Cleanfox is a free, well-built phone app. It runs on iOS and Android, connects to Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, iCloud, and AOL, bulk-deletes old mail, and sends a real unsubscribe request to the list owner rather than only hiding the sender. It is GDPR-compliant, it tells you the statistics panel exists, and it lets you switch that panel off. If you want a free mobile cleaner and you accept the trade knowingly, it does the job.

Why people look for a Cleanfox alternative

The reason is almost always the business model. Cleanfox describes it plainly on its own FAQ page, and plenty of people read that page and go looking for a tool that charges money instead.

  1. 1. Free, because your receipts are the product

Cleanfox’s FAQ says it was created by Foxintelligence, “a company which job is to anonymize the data contained in the order confirmations (e-receipts) available in the email accounts of Cleanfox’s users in order to publish and sell statistics on e-commerce.” Foxintelligence has belonged to NielsenIQ, a market-research group, since December 2021. The app is free because the aggregated shopping data inside your inbox has a buyer.

  2. 2. It has to read and delete to work

To build statistics from order confirmations, the app reads the content of those emails on its servers. To keep trashing mail from senders you unsubscribed from, it needs write access and a standing connection to your account. Both are more than an unsubscribe needs. Both stay in place until you revoke them.

  3. 3. The opt-out is a toggle, not a design

You can switch the statistics panel off in settings, and that opt-out is real. You are then trusting a settings switch at a market-research company to hold, while the app keeps the same access to the same mail. A tool whose architecture cannot collect the data in the first place asks nothing of your trust.

How Email Unsubscriber fixes each of these

We charge money so that your mail is never the product. Each point below is a property of the system you can inspect.

  1. 1. Your email content never reaches us

Your tab calls the Gmail or Microsoft Graph API directly. Our backend serves the scanning code and never receives a message, a receipt, or the access token. There is no anonymization step because there is no data on our side to anonymize.

    See the architecture
  2. 2. Read-only, and gone in an hour

The app asks for read-only scopes, so it cannot trash, move, or send anything. It never requests a refresh token, so access ends with your session in about an hour. No background rule keeps a key to your inbox.

    How access works
  3. 3. One payment instead of a data trade

You pay once for 30 days of full access. There is no free tier funded by your inbox, and there are no tiers and nothing to cancel. The business runs on that payment and on nothing else you own.

    See the price
  4. 4. Real unsubscribes, with a log and a violation flag

The app sends the sender’s own RFC 8058 one-click request where it exists and opens the sender’s link or mailto address otherwise. Every action lands in your audit log, and the “Still Emailing” filter flags any sender that ignores your opt-out, instead of quietly trashing their mail forever.

Cleanfox alternative questions

Do I need to migrate anything from Cleanfox?

No. Delete your mailbox inside Cleanfox’s settings, revoke its access on your Google or Microsoft account permissions page, then sign in to Email Unsubscriber and run a scan. The scan reads your inbox as it is today. Unsubscribes you completed in Cleanfox stay completed.

Is Email Unsubscriber safer than Cleanfox?

It sees less. Cleanfox reads the content of your order confirmations on its servers to build statistics. Email Unsubscriber requests read-only access, runs the scan inside your browser, never sends your email content or access token to our servers, and uses no refresh token. The authentication service is open source and the app passed Google’s CASA Tier 2 security assessment.

Is there a free trial?

You can connect a mailbox and run the scan before the payment step, and the homepage has a live preview that connects to nothing. A single payment then unlocks full access for 30 days. We do not offer a free tier, because a free tier that holds your inbox has to pay for itself somehow.

Does Cleanfox sell my personal data?

Cleanfox states it never shares or sells personal data to a third party, and that its parent company sells anonymized, aggregated statistics instead. That is an honest description. The point of this page is that Email Unsubscriber never receives the content in the first place, so the question does not arise.

Which email accounts does it support?

Personal Gmail accounts and personal Microsoft accounts such as Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live, from a web browser. Work or school Microsoft accounts, Yahoo, iCloud, and AOL are not supported. Cleanfox covers Yahoo, iCloud, and AOL on mobile.

The Cleanfox alternative that charges money instead of reading your mail

Connect a personal Gmail or Microsoft account, run one scan in your browser, and clear the senders you never wanted. One payment, with no statistics panel or background rule left on your inbox.
